Number 86 in its name
Number 86 in its name
By owners and fans called/pronounced “hachiroku” (that in Japanese means 86; hachi=8 and roku=6 ). For the name of new model Toyota had two reasons to use 86:
- Connection with history
- Connection with technical parameters of new model
History
First of them is clear connection with Toyota history of producing sport's cars. It connects new model to its predecessor Toyota AE86 that is still very popular among motorsport and especially drift fans. This car was pure fun to drive and allowed its owners to customize and tune it. We can say that AE86 was tuned by its owners to perfection either by genuine or third party accessories and kits. Even these days you can see Toyota AE86 competing(source: Toyota) |
Technical parameters
As the name of many sports cars is derived at least partially from their technical parameters the same is truth for Toyota GT86. In case of GT86 86 re presents 86mm of bore and stroke of its boxer engine. Furthermore you can find that 86mm is exact size of some other components of this model as diameter of exhaust or of ventilation rings.
- 86 mm bore and 86 mm stroke
- 86 mm is inner diameter of the GT86’s chrome-tipped exhaust
- 86 mm is diameter of ventilation rings

GT86 Badge
GT86 Badge
Toyota GT86 badge or logo have several meanings. First of all it is alphanumerical expression of the name of them model but there is something more than that. It represents the DNA of the car itself - that is fun to drive. 86 on the badge is not only expression of the name of the model but graphically as well represents 4 wheels in drift.
History of Toyota GT86
History of Toyota GT86
The feasibility study of the GT86 project began in 2006, with Toyota playing the leading role in both the Product Planning and Design phases. Collaborating as ‘Team 86’, Toyota and Subaru shared responsibility for the Development programme.
Subaru played the leading role in Engineering Design, with Toyota technologies and know-how employed in vehicle fundamentals such as the engine, transmission and suspension. At the Evaluation stage, both Toyota and Subaru worked together on roads and race tracks around the world to refine the vehicle’s performance and dynamic abilities.
